Eurasia Says U.K. Norway-Style Deal With EU Less Likely Now
(Bloomberg) -- Former London mayor Boris Johnson’s decision not to stand in the Conservative Party leadership race will probably make it more difficult for the U.K. to reach a deal with the EU, Eurasia analysts Mujtaba Rahman and Charles Lichfield write in client note.
- Now, the contest will be between Theresa May and Michael Gove who are both more hawkish on immigration, which will make a deal that preserves the U.K.’s membership of the Single Market harder to achieve
- Johnson has been pro-immigration and would have been more likely to renege on the Leave campaign’s commitment to control EU immigration to ensure near-full membership of the Single Market
