Belgium Blasts Challenge EU Solidarity, Refugee Deal: Eurasia

(Bloomberg) -- Deadly attacks in Brussels may spur xenophobic sentiment in Europe and will likely reinforce skepticism about visa-free travel for Turks, a central point in last week’s deal to stem the flow of refugees into the region, Eurasia analyst Mujtaba Rahman writes in client note.
  • The blasts in Brussels after the attacks in Paris last year will increase xenophobic and anti-immigration sentiment across the EU; this sentiment will likely buoy extremist right wing parties in core Europe and CEE countries
  • And it will put more pressure on incumbent governments and limit their options to address Europe’s multiple crises
  • Schengen will also come under more strain, with the likelihood of more spot checks in areas of strategic concern
  • Lastly, British PM David Cameron has argued the country will be safer in the EU, but these events will make that narrative harder to sell so repeated terrorist events could increase the chances of an “out” vote on June 23
