Democrats Want Probe of Trump Business Deals in Azerbaijan

(Bloomberg) -- Senate Democrats in letter to Treasury Sec. Steven Mnuchin, FBI Director James Comey and Atty General Jeff Sessions request investigation into whether President Trump’s business dealings in Azerbaijan may have violated anti-corruption laws, according to statement.
  • Democrats ask if dealings “may have served as a channel for money-laundering and other illicit activities tied to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps”
  • Senators cite March 13 New Yorker article, "Donald Trump’s Worst Deal,’’ that chronicles Trump Organization’s ties with Azerbaijan’s Mammadov family in joint development of Trump Tower in Baku
  • In letter, senators say story raises questions about whether Trump Organization may have violated Foreign Corrupt Practices Act “and the possibility that one of the construction entities involved with the Azerbaijani developers of the project may have been a front organization”
  • Signatories: Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio; Ben Cardin, D-Md; and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.
