MALAYSIA PREVIEW: January Trade Surplus Seen Lowest Since July

(Bloomberg) -- Malaysia’s trade surplus will fall below its one-year moving average in Jan. for the first time in six months, according to median forecast of economists.
  • Surplus has been above the average since Aug.; see chart here
  • Jan. surplus likely shrank to 7.60b rgt ($1.8b) from 7.99b rgt in Dec., according to median est. in Bloomberg survey; would be lowest since July
  • Ests. range from 5.6b rgt to 8.7b rgt; data due at noon local time tomorrow
  • Since release of Dec. trade data on Feb. 5, Malaysia’s 4Q GDP rose 4.5% y/y, beating 4.1% est.
  • Over the same period USD/MYR fell 0.5% to 4.1470; 10-year govt. bond yields down 6 bps to 3.911%
