(Bloomberg) -- As a witness for former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s defense, Finance Minister Henrique Meirelles said in testimony to Carwash probe judge Sergio Moro that Lula didn’t interfere in the edition of new norms instituted under the law against money laundering.

- Meirelles said that he accepted the post at BCB with the condition of it preserving its independence
- "During the course of the administration, this was respected to the extent that all the decisions that were taken prevailed and to the extent that he kept me in charge; this means respect for the institution’s independence"
- Only Lula’s defense questioned Meirelles in the testimony
- Moro said that the previous testimony provided by Meirelles will also be used
