Mozambique Says 1.8b Meticais Laundered in Nation Last Year

(Bloomberg) -- Money-laundering cases double to 16 from 2015, no one arrested so far, Attorney General Beatriz Buchili tells lawmakers in capital, Maputo.
  • Nation lost 459m meticais through corruption; 20.6m meticais, $240,000, 11 buildings and 8 vehicles recovered
  • Overall, 61,144 crimes committed, against 60,239 in previous year
  • Cases of abduction of businessmen dropped to 14 in 2016 from 44 in 2013
  • 151 people arrested for involvement in trafficking of rhino horns and elephant ivory; 82 of them detained at Limpopo border with South Africa, near South Africa’s Kruger Park
