PHILIPPINES PREVIEW: Imports Seen Expanding for Seventh Month

(Bloomberg) -- Strong domestic demand is seen fueling the seventh consecutive monthly increase in Philippines’ imports in Dec., Bloomberg survey shows.
  • Imports probably rose 10.7% y/y following 10.1% increase in Nov., according to median est. in Bloomberg survey; data due at 9am local time tomorrow
  • Related data will show trade deficit widened to $1.4b from $977m in Nov.: survey
  • Data released earlier this month showed exports fell 3.0% y/y in Dec., worse than median est. for 1.0% gain
  • Peso fell 0.2% vs dollar on Jan. 26 when data showed Nov. imports climbed 10.1% y/y, missing est. 16.1% increase
  • Peso now down 0.1% at 47.640 per dollar
