U.S. Said to Ready Sanctions on Venezuelan Vice President
(Bloomberg) -- U.S. Treasury preparing sanctions against Venezuelan Vice President Tareck El Aissami, according to two people familiar with the move.
- El Aissami would be the highest-ranking Venezuelan hit by U.S. sanctions and named to the so-called ‘Specially Designated Nationals’ list
- NOTE: El Aissami has been under investigation for years by U.S. authorities for alleged participation in drug trafficking and money laundering; has consistently denied all allegations against him
- NOTE: Action expected to further deteriorate U.S. relations with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who appointed El Aissami as vice president on Jan. 4 amid a deepening economic and humanitarian crisis
