Duterte Warns Dirty-Money Watchdog: Cooperate on Probe or Else
(Bloomberg) -- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte lashed out at Anti-Money Laundering Council for submitting a delayed report “without analysis” to National Bureau of Investigation that’s probing illegal drug trade.
- Duterte, in his speech in Pampanga province, says dirty- money watchdog which has “blanket authority” to peek at bank transactions, not doing its job
- “They said I have 211m pesos,” Duterte says, referring to allegations during campaign that he had hidden funds which he had denied; “why didn’t they charge me”

- “Watch out all of you because I could charge you,” he says in Pampanga, adding that once justice department has established cases “I will personally arrest you, all of you”
- Earlier Thursday, during his speech at signing of 2017 budget at presidential palace in Manila, Duterte warned central bank and AMLC: “I will count one to three, and if you don’t resign, I will treat you as a drug addict. You know you are contributing to the corruption of the country”
- Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas is independent and isn’t serving politics, Deputy Governor Diwa Guinigundo tells reporters at briefing in Manila, clarifying that he’s not directly commenting on Duterte’s statement
- “Tetangco is about to retire,” Duterte says, referring to Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Amando Tetangco whose term ends in July; Duterte warned agencies to “better prepare there, I’ll give you a whack”
- Tetangco who also chairs Anti-Money Laundering Council did not reply to a mobile-phone message seeking comment, while Bangko Sentral’s corporate affairs department declined to comment on Duterte’s remarks
